The Court Appearance

2001

" Lynn will you come to court with me - I think they'rs gonna send me down and no-one else will come ( mum/dad Jayne/Louise)- I dont want to go on my own" So Paul and I donned our suits - picked Janice up from mums house - and drove to Chorley Courts. I'd sent her some money to buy some new clothes - and asked to get some that look liked smart office attire - but she just bought some fleecy joggers and a new jumper. So Paul and I looked like her 'briefs'. This amused her no end - especially before the case was heard. The reason she was in the dock: On this occasion she had tried to drive completely intoxicated over to Euxton prison to visit a friend of hers who was incarcerated. She had taken her husbands car - without consent - and driven it with no tax and insurance - and this was the 5th time she had been caught driving for the same offences. On the way to prison she had stopped her car in the street - holding up traffic and approached the car behind her to ask directions to the prison. The driver of this vehicle was appalled at the level of her drunkenness and called the police. He had claimed that Janice could hardly walk. The court and witnesses were all very concerned about her attitude to drinking and driving - and the magistrate gave Janice a severe telling off. The bench adjourned to deliberate. Janice remained in the dock - turned to Paul and I with a great big grin - and her thumbs pointing upwards - much to the disgust and dismay of the witneeses called. THis was really a very funny sight - Janices cute face lit up; thumbs held high as if she was on some comedy programme - and voting for a dirty gret big YES - and her in the baggy joggers and sloppy jumper Paul and I were 'mouthing' her to and indicting to stop - and the witnesses still present were livid - at her jovial attitude. It was just like some comdey scene from the telly. The bench returned and told Janice that on this occassion, and due to the bad tretament in the police cells over the weekend - they would not send her to prison - they warned her that had the police not treated her badly - then she would have been sent to prison. They were being lenient this one last time and to make no mistake if this happened again she would definately be looking at a prison sentence. Her lawyer was fantastic defending her - and won support from the bench - if I ever need anyone - I know which lawyer to ask for! She was so relieved - we went to a cafe for lunch and then took her home - she was so happy. Her lawyer had outlined the problems she had faced in her home life with her parents asking her to leave home ( because of her antics); her husband giving her severe beatings often; and her children had been adopted - and gave this as reasons for her alcohol abuse. He was very good.
